Values... huh...
So, Pagan Values month... or Pagan Value Meal month...

I've read a lot of interesting stuff on Pagan values (or rather potential Pagan values, no one out there is claiming to have the definitive list). When I began thinking about the topic though, I ran across and interesting linguistic challenge. "Values" seems to be a term about what a particular group or demographic think is worthwhile for everyone to believe. So the "family values" of conservative Christian sects is about what they think all people should be for and about. When you're speaking only for yourself, you're not talking about "values" in a general sense so much as the things that you yourself value.

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't have Pagan Values, I don't have "values" period. I just have things I value. So in honor of the Solstice, here's a list of things that I value:

Love
Personal Responsibility
Community / Family
Hospitality
Diversity
Efficiency / Simplicity
Sustainability

Those are roughly in order, not of priority, but how well I'm doing in each area.

Mmmm ... that's not quite how I'd put it. Nor is it how the dictionary phrases it. From dictionary.com (mostly because I'm too tired to go drag out my Merriam-Webster):

10. values, Sociology. the ideals, customs, institutions, etc., of a society toward which the people of the group have an affective regard. These values may be positive, as cleanliness, freedom, or education, or negative, as cruelty, crime, or blasphemy.

11. Ethics. any object or quality desirable as a means or as an end in itself.

Fuzzy brain ... I am having trouble making a coherent post. The point is that it's not what you believe in (resurrections, mystic revelations, or little green men), it's what you think or feel is important to behave like, act upon, teach, acquire, or support. These values could be tangible (money) or intangible (freedom), and like the dictionary says -- either positive or negative.

I don't think it's harmful for groups of people to share values. This is really how societies are constructed underneath, and people usually work in better harmony if they share similar values. I do think it's really important that people have dialogue on what they value and why, rather than just assuming that everyone perceives things the same way.

Thanks for this reply, it really got me thinking. I don't know why I have such a problem wrapping my head around this issue. So would you say my list items are "values" or just things I value?
